A Lomita man was arrested when he allegedly tossed fireworks under a Sheriff’s Department mounted posse working in Hermosa Beach on July 4, police said Monday.

Craig Conant, 25, was arrested on suspicion of harming, interfering with or obstructing a peace officer’s horse or dog, and possession of an explosive device, police said.

Conant allegedly threw fireworks under the horses in an attempt to spook them as four deputies and two Hermosa Beach officers patrolled the Strand.

The horses remained calm and deputies were able to chase and arrest Conant, said Hermosa Beach police Chief Greg Savelli.

Savelli said the horses “are trained for just such antics, did not react and continued to work throughout the day and night.”

Savelli said he hopes to utilize the mounted patrol next year and possibly at other events, including Fiesta Hermosa, St. Patrick’s Day Parade and on New Year’s Eve.
