Re “Historic Trump trial underway” (April 16):

I never thought I’d see the day when a former president of the United States has to stand trial for a misdemeanor that happened eight years ago. A misdemeanor that has been  turned into a felony by DAs who happen to hate Trump and want him to be incarcerated. Do you think he is getting a fair trial in New York City? They have already dismissed dozens of potential jurors because they could not be without prejudice. The judge hates him and even refuses to let him go to his son’s high school graduation. So now, we have become a banana republic. A country where opposing the powers that be gets you unfair treatment and cancellation. Biden is in Philadelphia campaigning, while Trump sits in a courtroom every single day until June. This stinks like election interference.

CA vs. HB

The state of California is suing Huntington Beach over voter identification? Secretary of State Shirley Weber indicated that requiring an ID is harmful to those with low incomes, the elderly, people of color, and those with disabilities. Sounds to me like the city of Huntington Beach should be suing the state of California, and naming Shirley Weber in the suit, for not providing access to IDs for those with low incomes, the elderly, people of color and those with disabilities.

Shirley Weber is now on record as acknowledging the state’s failures. It should be a slam-dunk case.

Conspiracy theories

Mr. Perez (April 14) appears to be a competent wordsmith. However, the Supreme Court, unanimously 9-0, decided that the criteria for insurrection were not met. Is it Mr. Perez’s contention that he considers himself more competent than SCOTUS? As regards conspiracies perhaps using Hitler’s suggestion that the Jews were the cause of Germany’s economic woes might be a tad more plausible than Nero’s fiddlng. The world ignored that threat and guess how that conspiracy worked out. Perhaps he could share the rioters’ manifesto and which branches of the military were complicit. Ignoring conspiratorial threats is an option in which those of a Pollyannaish nature may find comfort, but realists understand how they evolve.
