Robert Bothner OBITUARY

With deep sadness, the family of Robert (Bob) Bothner shares his peaceful passing on April 18, 2024. Bob was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend who will be remembered with laughter and missed with tears.Bob was born to Emilie and Paul Bothner, German immigrants, in Hemet, California, and was raised on a farm that left him with an intimate love of land and gardening. His passion for sports was fostered at Hemet High School where he played football and basketball. After graduating from the University of California, Santa Barbara, with a degree in business and economics, Bob married his high school sweetheart, Carol Moyer, and joined the Air Force. They were stationed in El Paso, Texas, where Carol taught school while Bob flew B-26’s and B-29’s all over the world. Bob had a distinguished career in the brokerage and investment industry in California and on Wall Street, beginning in Long Beach as a broker with Dean Witter, including partnership in Eastman Dillon Union Securities, and ending as Chairman and CEO of Sutro & Co. While in Long Beach the family grew with the birth of daughter Lisa and son Kurt. In 1964 the family moved to the Palos Verdes Peninsula. After retirement Bob pursued his passions of gardening, traveling, and sports. He was a member of the Jack Kramer Tennis Club, belonged to the Peninsula Breakfast Club, golfed with his buddies twice a week, and traveled extensively with Carol until her death in 2003. Bob continued to meticulously and lovingly tend his garden, nurture his fruit trees, and create rock walls to enhance his property. In 2014, Bob married Rose Hamm, also an avid tennis player, and they cherished traveling, family events, and time with life-long friends from Long Beach and Palos Verdes. Having both been raised on farms, they spent many hours tending to the haven that Bob so lovingly created.Bob is survived by his devoted wife Rose, his beloved children Lisa (Doug) Jones of Westlake Village and Kurt (Lori) of Park City, Utah; his adoring grandchildren Ashley (Jonathon) Penn, Brian (Kayla) Jones, Kelsey Bothner, McKenzie Bothner, and Lucas Bothner; his cherished great-grandchildren Haley and Conor Penn and Chandler Jones; his loving sister-in-law Rosemary Sears of Hemet; and nieces, nephews, and extended family, all of whom will miss him with love, respect, and incredible memories. The family is deeply grateful to all the caregivers who made it possible for Bob to spend his last years at home. His passing leaves a void in the hearts and souls of everyone who knew and loved him – Bob was indeed a legend. He led a life well-lived and was rewarded with a peaceful passing. A Celebration of Bob will be held at a future date.In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Long Beach Ronald McDonald House, 500 East 27th Street, Long Beach, CA 90806, or to the Palos Verdes Peninsula Village, 375 Via Almar, Room D101, Palos Verdes Estates, CA 90274.
