Sarah (Sally) M. Mayer OBITUARY

Sarah (Sally) Mayer, 94, passed away peacefully in her home in Riverside on Tuesday, April 9, 2024. Born in Brooklyn, NY to George and Meta Upton, she lived a beautiful and loving life married to her husband, Richard, for 39 years, in Sewaren, NJ where they lived happily raising 6 wonderful children. After the sudden death of Rich in 1990 she unexpectedly fell in love with William Mayer and moved to West Covina, California where they spent 18 years making memories and building a new life together. Bill sadly passed away in 2009, after which Sarah moved to Riverside to be closer to her daughter. Sarah is survived by her daughters Elizabeth, Catherine, Carol, and Laura. She was predeceased by her two sons, Richard and George as well as a brother, John. She is also survived by William’s four children, William, Thomas, Mary Ann, and Frank. She will be dearly missed by generations of people, including her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, in-laws, nieces, nephews, cousins, and many, many friends. Anyone she met would agree she could light up the room with her smile and uplifting personality, not to mention being able to make you laugh in any situation. Her impact was so widespread that for her 90th birthday she received over 200 cards and letters from those who cared about her. She not only impacted her friends and family but the community as well. Sarah worked for the postal service for 19 years, retiring in 1989. She knew everyone in her small town and personally answered Santa letters from all the neighborhood children each year. She was a Sewaren Library Board Member, a Girl Scout leader, an active member of the PTO for over 20 years, and especially enjoyed being a Den mother for the Cub Scouts. When she moved to Riverside, she became an active member of her Independent Living “village”. She gave tours to prospective residents, assisted residents by driving them to appointments and stores, and served on the resident counsel. Although she was busy with friends, family, and volunteering, Sarah always made time to read as she was a voracious reader. She made it her mission to organize and expand the complex’s lending library for all to enjoy. After moving to Riverside, Sarah also became a member of Magnolia Baptist Church and joined the senior Caleb Choir. Sarah went on tour with them and a highlight was singing on the U.S.S. Arizona in Hawaii.Sarah loved traveling and seeing new places, with Austria and New Zealand being favorites, and experiencing everything life had to offer. Memorial service will be on Wednesday, April 24, 2024, 11:30am at Magnolia Church, 8351 Magnolia Ave., Riverside, CA 92504.In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to www.firstbook.org so her love of reading will live on in those who are less fortunate, or the American Diabetes Association, www.diabetes.org
