A man wanted in a carjacking in Jurupa Valley was arrested after a standoff in a Riverside park on Tuesday, April 23, the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department said.

The car takeover happened on Sunday just before midnight in the area of Pacific Avenue and 45th Street, said Sgt. Wenndy Brito-Gonzalez, a sheriff’s spokeswoman. The carjacker used physical force that injured the driver, Brito-Gonzalez said. The victim was expected to recover.

Then shortly before noon on Tuesday, deputies spotted the suspect near Tequesquite Avenue and Maxwell Court in Riverside. They followed him as he drove into Ryan Bonaminio Park. He initially refused to get out of the car.

Riverside police also responded to the park.

“After additional negotiations, the suspect surrendered and was taken into custody without incident,” Brito-Gonzalez said.
